Intelligent automated traffic cone placement for safer highway maintenance

Automated Traffic Cone Truck

Overview

The Bridgent BDG-ATC Automated Traffic Cone Truck represents a major advancement in highway maintenance safety, using an intelligent traffic cone stacking robot to place and retrieve traffic cones automatically — completely eliminating the need for workers to walk alongside moving traffic during cone placement operations.

The automated cone placement system uses a next-generation control system with computer vision to detect lane markings and road edges, ensuring that cones are placed precisely along the required line without the truck crossing into active traffic lanes. The system can handle both diagonal and straight-line cone arrangements, meeting the requirements of different traffic management scenarios.

The BDG-ATC can carry up to 300 traffic cones in its automated storage system. The robot arm retrieves cones from the storage system and places them at the programmed spacing intervals as the truck moves forward. For cone retrieval, the process is reversed — the robot arm picks up cones from the road surface and returns them to the storage system as the truck moves backward.

The system's intelligent control software allows the operator to program the cone placement pattern, spacing, and alignment from the cab, without leaving the vehicle. The operator monitors the placement process through cameras and sensors, intervening only if the system detects an obstacle or anomaly that requires manual attention.

By eliminating the need for workers to walk alongside moving traffic, the BDG-ATC dramatically reduces the risk of worker injuries during cone placement operations. Studies have shown that automated cone placement systems reduce worker exposure to traffic hazards by over 90% compared to manual cone placement methods.
