Overview
The Bridgent BDG-ASMM Aggregate Screening and Mixing Machine is a specialized piece of equipment that combines two critical quality control functions in a single machine: aggregate screening to remove oversized particles, and aggregate pre-mixing with a binder to improve the bonding between aggregate and asphalt in slurry seal applications.
The machine uses a double-layer linear vibrating screen to filter the aggregate. The upper screen layer removes oversized particles that exceed the maximum aggregate size for the slurry mix design, while the lower screen layer separates fine particles that fall below the minimum aggregate size. The result is a precisely graded aggregate fraction that meets the slurry mix design specifications.
After screening, the properly graded aggregate is transferred to the mixing chamber, where a binder — typically a diluted emulsified asphalt or a specialized aggregate coating agent — is added and mixed with the aggregate. This pre-mixing process coats the surface of each aggregate particle with a thin layer of binder, significantly improving the bonding between the aggregate and the asphalt emulsion in the slurry mix. The improved bonding results in a more durable slurry seal layer with better resistance to aggregate loss and surface raveling.
The BDG-ASMM is particularly valuable for slurry seal projects using aggregate with hydrophilic (water-attracting) surfaces, such as limestone or dolomite, where the natural affinity of the aggregate for water can interfere with asphalt bonding. The binder pre-coating overcomes this hydrophilic tendency, ensuring strong aggregate-asphalt bonding regardless of aggregate mineralogy.
The machine's compact design and self-contained operation make it easy to integrate into existing micro-surfacing and slurry seal operations. It can be positioned alongside the micro-surfacing paver or at the aggregate stockpile, depending on the project logistics.
